How to use this Guide

Section A gives general information on the relevance of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) to the protected herb industry, with details on the principles and components of IPM. Tables are provided via the home page to aid symptom diagnosis and to summarise information on pesticides currently approved for pest and disease control on protected herbs, together with notes on resistance issues.

In this section, the term ‘integrated pest management’ refers to both pest and disease control. ‘Pesticide’ is used as a generic term to cover plant protection products used for both pest and disease control.

Sections B and C are a collection of best-practice guidelines describing integrated management of key pests and diseases of protected herbs, respectively. Each guideline in Section B contains sections on pest recognition and symptoms, together with photographs to aid recognition. Subsequent sections describe sources of infestation and favourable conditions for specific pests, followed by details of integrated pest management strategies. Each guideline in Section C contains a section on disease symptoms, together with photographs to aid recognition. Subsequent sections describe disease sources and spread, favourable conditions for infection, and components of integrated disease management.

Section D contains appendices of further information and suppliers.
